Brachypelma boehmei
"Fuego"
Mexican Fire Leg Tarantula
AKA the Mexican Fireleg Tarantula is a gorgeous showy tarantula from the dry scrublands of Guerrero State, Southern Mexico.
As the common name suggests this is a truly striking colourful species with bright red/orange contrasting against the jet black. Besides their appearance and docile nature all members of the Genus make fantastic and rewarding easy to care for specialty pets.
They are very long lived and mature slowly. Males can take upwards of 7 years to reach sexual maturity but usually only live a year or two at most after their final molt.
Females can easily live to be 20+ years in captivity.
They can be a fairly large Tarantula reaching a size of roughly 6”.
Although not true Fossorials but all members of Brachypelma are generally found in shallow burrows, under rocks or logs in the dry scrubland home. They spend their days hidden emerging at night to hunt.
Due to over collecting and habitat loss this species is listed on CITES (the convention for trade in endangered species) and trade is highly regulated. Thankfully in Mexico this species as well as most Bracypelmas are bred in Captivity in large numbers to meet the need of the specialty pet trade.
